Everyone’s posting Reels right now.

But most brands are guessing.

We wanted more answers. So we tracked six months of performance across one of our clients accounts and broke down what actually drove growth, not just what looked good.

Here’s what made the difference:

First, what didn’t work

Let’s get this out of the way.

A lot of the stuff people think works… doesn’t.

Overly polished content: Looks great. Typically performs average. People scroll past what feels too produced.

Jumping on trends for the sake of it: If it doesn’t make sense for your brand, it shows. And it flops.

Weak openings: If you don’t hook someone instantly, they’re gone. Most drop off happens in the first few seconds.

What actually worked as an Instagram Reels Strategy

1. The first 2 seconds matter more than anything

This was the biggest shift.

The best-performing Reels didn’t ease in. They got straight to it.

Think:

  • Calling out a problem

  • Saying something slightly bold

  • Making someone feel seen

If it doesn’t stop the scroll immediately, nothing else matters.

2. Simple beats impressive

The content that performed best was not the most edited.

It was:

  • Clear

  • Quick

  • Easy to follow

Talking to camera. Explaining one idea. Showing something real.

No overthinking. No overproduction.

3. Value, Storytelling & Relatability win every time

The winning Instagram Reels strategy is... when the content tells a story, is relatable to the audience and provides some element of value.

The strongest posts:

  • Solved a problem

  • Shared a tip

  • Provided entertainment and humour

  • Told a story

  • Made the audience feel seen

This is what drives saves and shares. And that is what pushes reach.

4. Consistency > chasing viral moments

One viral video feels good. It doesn’t build growth.

Posting consistently did.

Accounts that showed up regularly saw:

  • More stable reach

  • Better engagement over time

  • Actual follower growth

Long breaks can slow your momentum because the platform relies heavily on recent engagement data and audience behaviour to distribute content.

5. Tell people what to do next

Sounds obvious. Most people skip it.

The Reels that performed better had clear direction (but didn't sound like they were directly selling):

  • "would love to know your thoughts" - drives comments and DMs.

  • "more on this soon" - drives follows so people can watch future videos.

  • “keep this in mind for later” - drives saves.

It works.

The takeaway

Growth on Reels isn’t random.

It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing the right things, consistently.

  • Strong hook

  • Clear idea

  • Real value

  • Consistent output

  • CTA

That’s it.
